Bedroom

The bedroom is often thought of as a difficult room to make ‘green’ or eco friendly. There are however, a few simple steps you can take.

Furniture

If you wish to replace your bedroom furniture make sure that it is from sustainable sources. Look out for companies who are registered with the Forest Stewardship Council. The Forest Stewardship Council is the organization that certifies  furniture as being eco friendly or sustainable. This is achieved by closely monitoring the harvesting and re-planting processes of the lumber companies who cut down the trees used for sustainable bedroom furniture.

Aspect

Its not just the furniture in your bedroom which can make it greener. The actual room you decide to use will influence how much sun and thus heat a bedroom will receive and therefore reduce the need for heating in the winter months. Rooms which get the evening sun are ideal as bedrooms.

Bed Linen

The methods and techniques used for the make standard fabrics used in bed linen and mattresses is very environmentally unfriendly. For this reason where possible you should look for organic alternatives such as organics cotton. Organic bed linen is produced from sustainable sources and does not use toxic processes or dyes. Organic cotton sheeting is widely available from many retailers. Not only will using organic materials benefit the environment but studies have also shown that there are health benefits as well.

Decorating

If decorating a your bedroom bear in mind the paint selection. Look out for paints which do not contain VOC compouds which are harmful to the atmosphere (and your health). If fitting carpet look for ranges which are made from natural fibres. Even better would be to consider the use of a bamboo flooring.
