| Fixtures and fittings may refer to all those accessories that are used in plumbing systems for better system design, use and comfort. In a typical plumbing system water is transmitted through pipes or tubes. However there are many other things that are inevitable for transmitting water like the joints, elbows, tees, unions, reducers. Such accessories that are used for effective transmission are referred to as fittings. Without the use of proper fittings it is impossible to change the course flow in pipes which are available only in standardised lengths and shapes.
A fixture can be defined as an accessory that is attached to the plumbing system mainly to deliver and drain away water. Plumbing fittings are usually concealed whereas fixtures are the parts that are directly accessed by man. The most common fixtures that were use today are water closets, urinals, laboratories, kitchen sinks, utility sinks, tubs, bidets, drinking and garden fountains. A fixture can be thought of as a device that has one or more water outlets and a drainage system. They also have an attached flood rim or level above which the water starts flowing inwards and an overflow limit above which water starts draining. Most common fixtures like the faucet and showers do not have this owing to their purpose. Many manufacturers have come up with new fixtures that have electronic controls in them which provide a better control for the user. They are also designed with water conservation concerns in mind. The common faucet which has an electronic sensor for automatic turning on and turning off are quite popular today. The same feature is available in urinals too. |
