The travel industry is stepping up its efforts to produce sustainability strategies with the emphasis on green travel gradually becoming a priority. The benefits are threefold in terms of addressing climate change, cutting costs and gaining a competitive advantage. The latter is particularly important during an economic downturn so green issues are likely to feature more prominently during and after the recession.
The term `sustainability’ was first introduced in the Brundtland Declaration which described it as something which: “meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
When the notion of corporate social responsibility first came into being it was a philosophy whereby larger firms drove it down to smaller elements in their supply chain. It has now reached the operational level and green travel policies have become an important part of the corporate and social responsibility mix.
Traditionally, the main criteria for determining corporate travel purchase has been cost, security and convenience but greener travel is increasingly being taken into account. Individuals are also starting to consider the environmental impact of their holidays abroad and trying to keep their carbon footprints to a minimum.
Travel advice is available from eco friendly holiday firms focusing on destinations to visit without flying. These are known as eco travellers who wish to learn about the world and its nature and history without damaging the environment. It is perfectly possible to see the world and protect it at the same time by taking simple steps to reduce emissions such as staying in eco friendly accommodation, using ethical companies and being responsible about sightseeing and leisure activities.
At grass roots level, local authorities are playing their part by providing cycle routes, footpaths and alternative means of transport for their communities.
